A Curved Spine Doesn't Move Like a Straight One
It changes how your whole body works, and a generic workout, built for a symmetrical spine, can quietly make things worse.
-
One side is doing all the workUneven muscle pull leaves one side overworked and tight, the other switched off.
-
The lower back pain won't quitStanding, sitting, lying down: there's rarely a position that feels fully at ease.
-
You're wary of "just any" workoutGeneric gym classes and YouTube routines weren't designed for an asymmetrical spine, and that uncertainty is exhausting on its own.
-
Fixing your posture solo hasn't workedWithout a trained eye on your alignment, it's genuinely hard to know what's actually helping.
Not Just a Feeling. A Finding.
This isn't wellness marketing. It's a growing body of peer-reviewed evidence on Pilates and scoliosis. Here's what it actually shows.
A 2021 review in the journal Medicine, combining 10 controlled clinical trials, found Pilates-based exercise outperformed general physiotherapy and no-exercise controls on Cobb angle, trunk rotation, pain and quality of life.
Medicine (Wolters Kluwer), 2021 · PMC8483862A 2023 clinical trial in the European Journal of Pediatrics found that a structured 12-week Pilates programme improved both Cobb angle and respiratory muscle strength in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis.
European Journal of Pediatrics, Springer Nature, 2023Clinical reviewers increasingly place structured exercise, Pilates included, alongside bracing as part of conservative, non-surgical scoliosis management, valued for building trunk control and cutting pain-related disability.
Scoliosis Research Society / SOSORT literatureResults vary by curve type, severity and age. No two spines respond identically. Pilates is a conservative, supportive approach, not a substitute for medical care. Always check with your physician or physiotherapist before starting, especially with a structural diagnosis.

You've Got Questions
Is Pilates actually safe with scoliosis? +
For most people, yes, when a trained instructor is tailoring the exercises to your specific curve. Our Clinical Pilates team includes rehab-trained instructors and practising physiotherapists. Still, check with your doctor first, especially if you have a structural diagnosis or wear a brace.
Will it straighten my curve? +
Honestly, no, not on its own, and we won't tell you otherwise. What the research does show is meaningful improvement in pain, posture, flexibility and quality of life, and in some studies, a measurable reduction in Cobb angle when practised consistently alongside broader conservative care.
How often do I need to come? +
Most clients see real change training 2–3 times a week. Your instructor will map out a frequency based on your postural analysis and how your body actually responds.
Do I need a doctor's referral? +
No referral needed to book your first session, but we always recommend checking with your physician or physiotherapist before starting anything new, particularly if your scoliosis is being actively monitored or treated.
Which studio is right for me? +
Any of our 5 studios, United Square, Katong Point, Raffles Quay, The Heeren and Galaxis, have instructors experienced in Clinical Pilates. Tell us your preferred area on WhatsApp and we'll match you with the right one.
